| 5. How does Vector and Raster images are Different ? |
Vector Images:
Vector images are created in a Vector drawing program, such as Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw or Freehand. Vector images are stored mathematically, rather than by pixels. They can be resized in a Vector drawing program, without loss of image quality. For this reason, most logos are created in Vector format. Vector images are perfect for printing, they have unlimited resolution.
Advantages of the Vector file format:
File size is very small. (unlimited resolution!) Images can be printed in 1, 2 and 3 SPOT Colors. (Offset printing) Images can be printed in Full Color CMYK (4 Color printing process) Color changes and editing can be made instantly (with software) Each design element can be edited separately. Files can be resized without any loss of quality. File size is small enough to fit on a floppy disk.
You will receive: 1 Adobe Illustrator Vector EPS file for your Printing Facility. We suggest you make backups of this file.
Notice how the Rasterized image to the left gets very fuzzy after being enlarged. You see each pixel.
Raster Images (Also called bitmapped or pixilated) Raster images are created in a photo program, such as Photoshop, Painter, or Picture Publisher. The images are stored as pixels, rather than mathematically.
Low resulation Rasterized images (GIF and JPG) are perfect for Web use, but cannot be used for printing. They use the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) Color mode. If you print a GIF or JPG, the edges of the image become jagged on the print output. Do not use these files for printing.
High resulation Rasterized images (TIFF) for print, should be at least 300 dpi. Using the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black.) color mode. These files must be printed using a 4 color printing process, which can be quite costly.
The actual file size of a high resulation TIFF can be HUGE. For this reason, we create our finished art in Vector format. (A Vector file with a size of 149k, converted to high resulation TIFF, can be as big at 2 MEGS.)
Advantages of Raster Images:
Low resulation RGB Raster images are perfect for Web use.
Files can be imported into word processing documents, photo programs, and web programs.
The down side of Raster images:
High resulation TIF's have to be printed in 4 color - CMYK rather than the traditional 1, 2, and 3 color offset printing method. This can be costly. Contact your Printing Facility for Full Color pricing.
High resulation TIFF file size can be HUGE, which can present problems with transferring over phone lines, or saving to diskette.
If the image is enlarged, you will see pixels. All crispness will be lost.
Rasterized files you will receive:
1 low resulation 72 DPI GIF or JPG file for Web use. The amount of shading in your image, will determine the file format. Do not use this file for printing. This is a screen resolution file.
1 high resulation RGB 300 dpi BMP file or 1 300 dpi CMYK TIFF for desktop publishing on your own PC. Use this file to create your own letterheads, envelopes and business cards. (Color printer needed) |
